Auguste Rodin's Adam - Art Gallery of Ontario

Over the last few weeks, I have been going to the free Wednesday evenings at the Art Gallery of Ontario, where I find a quiet corner and draw for 1 hour-90 minutes. My latest focus has been Auguste Rodin's Adam. After each week, I would scan in this pass, so you can see how I build it up as I go.

My next piece I am studying is an oil painting by Augustus John of The Marchesa Casati in 1919. I enjoy these longer studies to try and get inside the head of the artist and understand the decisions he or she made.

An Experiment. July 8th, 2010

On Tuesday July 6th, I started a Life Drawing class at the Toronto School of Art with a great teacher by the name of Thomas Hendry. Thomas put forth a request for us to revisit our idea of a gesture drawing as more of a scribble/wire sculpture. And so, for my next open session a couple days later I came to scribble and I had a blast. Thomas asked us to draw in the over size pad of 24 x 36, which takes a bit of getting used to, as I was struggling with proportions a bit.

This scribble approach was first put forth to me by another fine instructor by the name of Anthony Harrison at  George Brown College this winter past.  It took my brain a little time to wrap my head around it, but it helps me to loosen up and the energy translates into my longer drawings as the evening progressed.

As well, at the art supply store down the road from class, there was some big and chunky sanguine "conte a paris" conte on clearance that I picked up and used and absolutely LOVED. Now I am on the search for more of it.

Ever have a day when you want to lop off your right hand, or pitch over a cliff because your drawing is not working? This was one of those days for me..this model's proportions were all over the map. The final drawing of the day and the last posted here are closer to where she sits proportionally..

Great model this evening, with active poses and great masses to sink your visual teeth into. I even included a incomplete drawing as I was happy with where it was going, but I was in 10 min pose mode when I was doing a 5, drat.

Diane McGrath Gallery June 22nd & 29th, 2010

These are a few gestures and a couple longer poses from my last two evenings drawing at the Diane McGrath Gallery in Toronto on Queen West. It was a great month of being introduced to these fine aerialists and I look forward to when they return in September. Diane is taking the summer off from hosting these sessions to pursuit some other creative work. It's too bad..if your pardon the pun...I was just getting the hang of it.
